Chennai, Oct 26 (UNI): President Droupadi Murmu will arrive here in Chennai on Thursday night a two-day visit to the Chennai. After a brief reception at the airport, she will proceed to Raj Bhavan for an
overnight stay.
The President will participate as the Chief Guest in the 8th Convocation of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) at ECR on Friday morning at 1000 hrs.
Tamil Nadu Governor Ravindra Narayan Ravi, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Minister of AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State, for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur, State Higher Education Minister Dr. K. Ponmudy will be the guest of honours.
During the Convocation, Ms Droupady Murmu will award gold medals to the meritorious students of the University.
In all 1944 students of the 4 Schools from the six campuses of IMU as well as from the affiliated institutes of IMU will receive their degrees. A total of 245 candidates will receive the degrees in person. They will include
two Ph.D. Scholars and one Scholar of M.S. (By Research).
Ms Murmu was expected to leave for New Delhi after the function. Tight security arrangements have been provided in the city in view of the President’s visit. More than 1,000 police personnel were deployed on security duty in view of her visit.
Tight security has been put in place in Raj Bhavan, where two petrol bombs were hurled at the gates by a miscreant yesterday, who was subsequently overpowered by the security personnel and arrested, and at the IMU campus.
