Smart meters much beneficial than current meters: AEE

Srinagar, May 26: The residents of Rajbagh area of Srinagar on Thursday staged a protest against the installation of smart electric meters in the locality and many smart meters were also damaged by protesters.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), scores of women assembled at the main road and raised slogans against the installation of smart meters, BJP and incumbent J&K administration.

The protestors said, “We are ready to install new smart meters if the government will provide us jobs so that we can afford to pay the hefty amount for electricity bills.”

They further said that even if the current bills are not affordable for them, how can they be able to pay huge bills as they belong to the poor section of the society. “The government must review its decision in order to assist the poor people here,” the protesters said.

Talking to KNO, AEE Zubair Hanan said that “there is a misconception among people that smart meters are expensive but the fact is new smart meters are much more beneficial than current meters. The rate per unit, which is currently applied, will be applied in new meters as well.”—(KNO)
